3eme Students Explore the World War One Battlefields of Northern France and Belgium

Students enjoyed a highly successful educational trip to the World War One battlefields of Northern France and Belgium in October 2026, bringing their classroom studies of the conflict to life.

The visit included key historical sites in the Somme, where students explored the Thiepval Memorial and walked through the trenches, gaining a deeper understanding of trench warfare and how the First World War is remembered in Britain and across the Commonwealth. The first part of the trip concluded with a visit to Verdun, including Fort Douaumont.

In Belgium, students explored the Tour de l’Yser and the Bayou de la Mort, learning about the crucial role geography and terrain played in warfare. The group also enjoyed time in the historic city of Bruges.

The trip ended with a visit to Brussels. Students took part in a guided city tour and visited the European Parliament, where an interactive role-play activity gave them the opportunity to act as Members of the European Parliament. Working on proposed legislation and voting on key issues, they gained first-hand insight into how European laws are debated and approved.

A special thank you goes to accompanying staff members, Mr Elwell, Mrs Chapman and Mrs Jagoe, (not forgetting Mrs Chevrot for her excellent organization), who helped ensure another memorable and rewarding trip.
